Rock anchor bolts have been installed by IOSA on some shorelines where there are no naturally-existing attachment points, such as a tree or large rock, to which containment boom can be secured.  A 10" eyebolt is inserted into a deep hole drilled into rock, then secured with cement.  The photo above shows a rock anchor bolt with containment boom attached by a line that is secured to the bolt with shackles and a pelican hook.

Rock anchor bolts are now installed at several locations throughout the San Juan Islands, including Sucia Island (north of Orcas), False Bay on the southwest side of San Juan Island, Deer Harbor on southwest Orcas Island and Mud, Blind & McArdle Bays on the south end of Lopez Island.

IOSA will be installing more rock anchor bolts in other locations in the San Juans beginning in the Spring of 2009.
